Ear Piercing Q & A

Why do I need an annual physical exam?

Even if you never get sick and don’t have any underlying health issues, you can still benefit from an annual physical exam. Chronic diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes, don’t develop overnight.

Preventive physicals not only include an evaluation of your overall health, they often include blood work. If your blood cholesterol has been gradually on the rise for several years, for instance, you might need to make lifestyle changes to bring it back down to reduce your risk of heart disease in the future.

Your annual physical exam is also one-on-one time with your dedicated practitioner. It’s a chance to be candid about things that bother you, or changes that have been developing as you get older. The better you are about managing your checkups, the greater your chances of staying healthy with age.

What happens during an annual physical exam?

Dr. Shenouda designs your physical exam based on your specific needs, as well as how long it’s been since your last checkup. Your session generally includes:

  • Physical exam
  • Blood work
  • Evaluation of your family medical history
  • Blood pressure check
  • Evaluation of the lymph nodes

Your physical exam can also include a discussion about family planning and birth control, or specialized tests for work, school, sports, or immigration.

How do I prepare for my annual physical exam?

For blood work or a urinalysis, you might need to avoid eating or drinking the night before your appointment. Dr. Shenouda’s team lets you know at the time of booking. Don’t worry if you accidentally eat or drink beforehand — you can always reschedule your lab work at a later time.

Some men and women find it beneficial to write down a list of concerns before meeting with Dr. Shenouda. That way you can make sure you cover everything you need. You may also want to bring the following items with you to the appointment:

  • Prior medical records, including emergency room and urgent care visits
  • List of medications and dosages
  • Report of your family medical history

By building a relationship with Dr. Shenouda and his team, you can have someone to call if you get sick or need urgent visits between physicals.

To get started, schedule your physical at the office of Emile Shenouda, MD, by using the online booking feature, or over the phone.
